The Question

Every astronomy book I picked up was either a doorstop or a children's picture book. There was no middle, nothing that trusted a curious adult to read something short. I wanted to make the book I couldn't find: something you could finish on a train and still learn from.

The Approach

I wrote the book in five chapters: Void, Stellar Cycles, Gravity, Missions, Infinity, each self-contained enough to read in one sitting. The design constraint was that every page had to earn its place. No filler, no stock photography, no chapter dividers that just say "Chapter One."

  • Illustration — A minimalist astronaut character runs through the book as a reader-surrogate. Line-drawn, curious, always looking up. He appears on the cover and reappears at moments where the reader needs a moment to feel small.

  • Typography — A single sans-serif family with an italic serif for pull quotes. The type does the work, no decorative headers, no ornaments.

  • Structure — The bracket under "TO" in the title represents the timeline of the universe, from the void (beginning) to infinity (now). That mark repeats through the book as a section marker.

The Outcome

Void to Infinity is available on Amazon and has been read by more people than any of my other work combined. Most of the feedback has been from people who don't usually read science books, which was the whole point.
